The Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish oil is very important to the body as they contain essential fatty acids such as omega 3s and omega 6s. These are ‘essential’ as the body does not produce them and relies on outside sources for them. Though you’ve probably often heard the word “fats” and associated it with “bad fats”, there are some fats that are necessary for your survival and they are referred to as good fats.

1. Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids play a big part in cognitive function support, such as learning and memory.

2. Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids help the body improve skin diseases and treat arthritis. This is due to its amazing anti-inflammatory properties! However, the tricky thing with Omega-6 essential fatty acids is that most people get enough in their diet, but they ruin it by eating foods that are high in sugar and trans fats. This can lower the Omega-6 levels in the body, even if you are getting the right amount of Omega-6 essential fatty acids in your diet. So eating healthy is important!

Some of the benefits of Fish Oils are:

  • •  Maintains cardiovascular health
  • •  Relieves pain and inflammation
  • •  Improve mood
  • •  Improve memory
  • •  Supports healthy Skin
  • •  Supports energy and metabolism

Where can I get my daily dose of Fish Oils?

Your body is relying 100% on your fish oils (Omega-3 and 6) from food sources or supplementation, as the body cannot produce these. You want to make sure you are getting the right balance of Omega-3 and 6. Having 2-3 servings of fish weekly can support your intake. However, there are other sources of omegas and if you find yourself falling short, supplementation can be a great way to increase your levels.

Some food sources containing Omega-3 and 6 are:

  • •  Oily fish
  • •  Chia Seeds
  • •  Walnuts Avocado
  • •  Salmon Tuna
  • •  Flaxseed Sardines
  • •  Chicken

What are some of the symptoms of Fish Oil Deficiency?

  • •  Dry and lifeless hair and dandruff
  • •  Dry or bumpy type skin
  • •  Weak, soft or brittle Nails
  • •  Poor Vision
  • •  Dry eyes
  • •  Poor concentration
  • •  Poor Memory
  • •  Depression
  • •  Low Mood
  • •  Anxiety
  • •  Experiencing learning issues
  • •  Experiencing behavioural issues

Are all Fish Oil supplements the same?

With mercury levels that are being found in our fish today, we are also putting that into our bodies when we eat it. What we want is good quality oils with the lowest level of toxins. The fish oils we stock in our clinic are high-quality therapeutic grade that have gone through various filtration processes to deliver the best quality fish oils for our clients.

How Much Fish Oil should I be having Daily?

The average recommended daily intake of fish oils (essential fatty acids) is 500mg per day for general health. This is only a guide and is the minimum to be taken for the average person. With new research showing benefits for cardiovascular, arthritis (pain) and cognitive function linked with high therapeutic doses of fish oils, this needs to be taken into consideration. Depending on your health circumstances, history and needs, this may differ.  It’s important to discuss fish oil supplementation with a healthcare provider to minimise the risk of potential drug interactions and side effects.

For vegans and vegetarians, we also stock omega supplements for you such as flaxseed oil. High-concentration liquid fish oil is also available. We even have high-quality therapeutic grades suitable for children.
