What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that provides non-invasive and drug free approach to restoring the integrity of the spine and nervous system and its surrounding tissues to enhance normal body function and health.

Chiropractic is the largest drug-free health care profession in the world and has been safely practised throughout the world for over 100 years on people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. Patient satisfaction drives the success of chiropractic with millions of people around the world enjoying the benefits.

Chiropractors believe that many health problems stem from a misalignment or subluxation of the spine. A subluxation of the spine can occur from everyday life events such as the:

• physical stress of repetitive work, injuries, car accidents, poor posture;

• mental stress from relationships and work; and

• chemical stress of poor diet, alcohol and drugs.

A chiropractor determines and corrects the subluxation by applying gentle, controlled force in a precise direction to the spine and or joints of the body with their hands or a small instrument known as an activator. The purpose of this adjustment is to bring the body back into alignment, eliminate interference to the nervous system and consequently, restore the body’s health. Chiropractic care clears the path for the body to maintain its own health.

What to expect?

Prior to your first appointment you will need to either download and complete our   or arrive 15 minutes early in order to complete the form before your appointment.

One of our chiropractors will assess your complete health history and then perform a thorough chiropractic, neurological and orthopaedic exam to determine the appropriate course of care for you. Your chiropractor may require you to have a spinal x-ray to determine the condition and position of your spine, stress areas, and the likely progression of your spinal health over time. We have digital x-ray facilities on site if you need an x-ray.

On your second appointment you will be presented with a Report of Findings. This will explain the findings from your initial consultation, examination, posture photos and x- rays (if taken). Your chiropractor will then present you with optimal care recommendations and you will be adjusted. Progress is monitored through periodic examinations and follow-up reports. In the following appointments, your chiropractor will recommend healthy lifestyle advice, including nutrition and how to take care of your spine.

Chiropractors are university trained professionals who have received a five year degree to care for their clients using extremely safe, gentle and scientific techniques. The New Zealand government’s Commission of Inquiry into Chiropractic concluded: “Spinal adjusting is a vital, very safe and clinically effective form of health care. Chiropractors have more thorough training in spinal mechanics and spinal care than any other health professional. Furthermore, chiropractic is scientifically based.”

Our chiropractors assess your condition and choose the most appropriate techniques just for you.

The bones of the spine are called vertebrae; these house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to all the parts of the body and back to the brain again this is called the nervous system. The nervous system is the master system of the human body and it controls the activity of all other systems (it is essentially the body’s electrical wiring).

The nervous system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body including the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, and immune system. If there is tension, altered movement or misalignment (subluxation) of the spine then this can cause an interference of the nervous system’s ability to transmit vital electrical signals through your body which affects your health. A chiropractic adjustment restores the proper functioning of the nervous system and allows the body to work at its best and restore health.

A chiropractic adjustment is the skill of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is fixated, “locked up”, or not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the joints to gradually regain more normal motion and function. The purpose of this safe and natural procedure is to permit improved spinal function, improved nervous system function, and improved health.
There are many ways to adjust the spine. Usually the chiropractor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly-accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow, constant or indirect pressure.

After years of university training and clinical experience, each chiropractor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjusting approaches.

Our chiropractors recognise that every patient is uniquely different and your care should be too. Our chiropractors will evaluate each patient’s unique symptoms, their age and condition and develop an individual treatment approach accordingly.

To become a registered chiropractor in Australia you must have studied an accredited five-year chiropractic program conducted at a university within Australia, or have completed an accredited program overseas that satisfies the requirements set by the Australian Chiropractic Regulating authority.

A chiropractor’s education never ends. After graduating university, chiropractors must complete continuing professional development courses and seminars to upgrade and improve their skills and to stay current on the latest scientific research.

Private health insurance companies recognise the benefits of chiropractic and provide rebates to their members. At Karrinyup Wellness Centre we also provide HICAPS facilities.
