Why You Should Never Sit on Your Wallet

Why You Should Never Sit on Your Wallet

walletsciatica[1]As a Chiropractor I commonly see many bad habits that create spinal dysfunction and lead to a variety of health problems. It is common to see a patient walk into our clinic with a huge wallet in their back pocket that is left their while they sit. When you sit on your wallet you create an uneven surface that our body must compensate for by creating a functional scoliosis, which in turn puts stress on spinal joints, nerve roots, muscles and ligaments and may lead to back pain, fatigue, trigger points and more. Back pain and sciatica are very common complaints seen in our office and back pain will affect 70-80% of people worldwide. Most spinal pain can be avoided with proper spinal hygiene including proper lifting techniques, good work place ergonomics, chiropractic care, proper sleeping position and regular exercise.

I often hear “I only sit on my wallet when I drive”! This is still a No! No! When we use blocks in our office for pelvic alignment, they are meticulously placed for a specific correction and for a specific amount of time (usually only a few minutes). Imagine the stress placed when sitting shifted on your wallet in the car bouncing around for hours, day after day, week after week. When sitting, always ensure you take your wallet out of your back pocket and don’t sit on it ever again.
