Which foods SHOULD be bought organic?
How else can I reduce my intake of pesticides and other toxins?
We all know that eating organic is best. However, for a lot of us, cost and accessibility make it difficult to do so all the time.
For all of you who already eat organically a majority of the time, well done! For everyone else, try to buy local, fresh, organic product where possible.
To make this easier, below is a list of foods which are higher in pesticides. These are the ones which should be bought organically as much as possible.
- Spinach
- Nectarines
- Grapes
- Capsicums
- Potatoes
- Blueberries
- Lettuce, all varieties
- Kale/collard greens
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Peaches
- Cherries
- Pears
- Tomatoes
- Celery
Alternatively you can grown some of these foods yourself. Foods such as lettuce, tomatoes and herbs are relatively easy to grow at home and take up little space if you have a smaller garden.
Other ways you can reduce you and your family’s intake of pesticides and other toxins are:
- Use a vegetable wash, either store bought or homemade, (google homemade vegetable wash for recipes. They normally include bicarb soda and/or vinegar).
- Rinse and gently scrub fruits and vegetables under cold water before use.
- Peel your fruits and vegetables when possible
- Blanching with hot/boiling water followed by cold water.
- Boiling foods before consumption.
It matters what we put into our bodies.
I hope this information is helpful and that you are all better equipped to reduce your daily toxic load.
Happy eating!
