Remembering to Support Mum Too This Breastfeeding Week

world breastfeeding week karrinyup wellness centre

This Breastfeeding Week, we’re celebrating the incredible commitment of breastfeeding mothers. While there is often a lot of focus on baby’s needs, it is also important to remember the physical demands breastfeeding can place on Mum’s body.

In the early months, babies typically feed 8 to 12 times per day, with many mothers spending several hours each day breastfeeding. As a result, mums often spend long periods in the same positions. Over time, these repetitive postures can place increased strain on the body, contributing to tension and discomfort in the neck, shoulders, upper back, wrists, and lower back.

Breastfeeding is a beautiful part of motherhood, but it can also be physically demanding. Supporting your own comfort is just as important as supporting your baby.

A few simple tips to help look after your body while breastfeeding:

  • Bring baby up to you rather than leaning forward towards baby
  • Use pillows or feeding supports to take some pressure off your arms and shoulders
  • Try changing feeding positions throughout the day to avoid putting stress on the same areas
  • Experiment with positions such as side-lying or laid-back feeding to give your body a break
  • Remember to look after yourself too! Drink plenty of water, eat well, rest when you can, and give your body time to recover
  • If you are experiencing musculoskeletal discomfort while breastfeeding, a chiropractor can assess your individual situation and discuss whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for you. Maintaining comfortable movement and good posture may assist in managing the physical demands of feeding, carrying and caring for your growing baby.

This Breastfeeding Week, remember to care for yourself too. Looking after your body can make feeding more comfortable, helping you and your baby enjoy a more positive breastfeeding experience.
