Magnesium and its Benefits

Magnesium and its Benefits

Magnesium is a supplement often spoken about here at Karrinyup Wellness Centre and something recommended to a number of our clients. Magnesium deficiency, after Vitamin D, is the second most common deficiency in developed countries due to the popular foods in our diets and their poor source of magnesium as well as soil depletion. It often goes unrecognised and neglected despite being a very important mineral for the body. It has over 300 cellular reactions relying on it and it is crucial in body functions such as energy production, protein synthesis, fatty acid metabolism, muscle contraction and bone integrity.

Although magnesium deficiency often goes unrecognised some common symptoms can include muscle cramps and twitches, restless leg syndrome, high-stress levels, sleep difficulties, low energy levels and fatigue. A chronic magnesium deficiency has also been associated with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and osteoporosis.

Apart from not consuming enough magnesium other conditions can further increase the likelihood of being depleted. Examples of these things include high alcohol intake, stress, digestive disorders, type 2 diabetes and ageing.

So how can we boost our magnesium intake? Here at Karrinyup Wellness Centre, you can chat to a practitioner about your concerns and if needed we have a range of great supplements. Apart from supplements, you can also alter your diet to include lots of magnesium-rich foods. These can include things such as kale, spinach, seaweed, dark chocolate, avocado, nuts, seeds and salmon just to name a few.

If any of the above sounds familiar to you or you would like more information chat with your Chiropractor or Naturopath at your next visit to the centre.
